2015/12/14 - Donald Trump has around a third of the Republican votes. He could leverage that and become the Republican nominee. But polls project a large Democrat turnout and he loses to Hillary in the General Election - in every poll.
If Trump runs as an Independent, he could feasibly take a few Republican states (Kentucky,Tennessee) but what if he went big and took more Republican states then the Republican candidate?
Let's say Trump comes in second place to Hillary/Dems and Cruz/Rubio come in 3rd? Let's also say that the Democrats did not get enough Electoral votes to win (Trump takes Florida, Cruz takes Ohio). What happens now?
The Constitution states that the election will be decided in the House of Representatives. Today, the House is overwhelmingly Republican. So who would the Republicans vote in for president?
They could vote to make Cruz/Rubio president - but he came in 3rd place and would have a very weak mandate. You know they aren't going to vote in Hillary - so why not Trump?
Making Trump president probably doesn't hurt the Republican congressmen reelection cycle (they won't lose many voters - might even gain some). They wouldn't be "responsible" for him - because he isn't Republican. The Republicans could attack his policies in Congress - or they can vote with Trump - whatever they wanted.
If Cruz/Rubio were president, legislation would flow unless you still had filibustering Democrats (they'll be there). The Legislature would be more partisan then ever. America goes through the right-wing "awakening" (akin to "vietnam-war" protesters - who were mostly leftists). Tearing shit up ...
